I think Reuben makes some very good and valid points here. This is worth a look and a read for any magician in school experiencing difficulty. Obviously nothing new theory-wise but I think it is an entertaining look at the subject.

This may be the most important section of this e-book due to the fact that without relating your patter to the environment around you, or the spectator’s environment, you will FAIL MISERABLY, and in some cases even look like a shmuck.

This is totally and completely untrue. You're being way too closed-minded here. Unrelative patter is perfectly fine as long as it is something understandable that can be easily grasped by the lay audience. I don't always use relative patter and always get fantastic mileage out of each effect I perform. At the end of the day, it's always the VISUAL impact you make on a spectator that matters the most, not what you say to them. In reflection, they will not care nor remember that you referenced a specific happening in class, they will remember how that card changed colour with just a wave of your hand.

Patter is quite a flexible thing when it comes to live performance and it is my personal belief that way too many magicians seem to overlook that fact and try to stick to specific guidelines when developing patter. Much of my patter, while maintaining a general idea related to the effect, changes frequently in my vocal deliverance, as well as the vocabulary I use. For the more adult audiences I tend to focus on articulation, a bit of light or dry humour, and a deliberately complex vocabulary to accompany it. I feel this is a fair representation of my personality. For teenagers I still use a delivery focused on articulation but I tone down the vocabulary, include more slang and jargon to emphasize my position as a friend and fellow fun-loving teenager, and tend to adopt a more goofy performance style in lieu of my idol, Jay Sankey. And for children, I speak slowly with of course, a maintained articulation, and emphasize important words and phrases as well.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

And yes I agree,

I have to say, you should delete this altogether, this was basically now thinking of it, an essay just to write an essay. Delete it!!!

But it had a couple valid points I guess.

hehe, it kinda read like an essay that was written because you wanted to write an essay Razz

but as for patter goes, just do what feels right.
it will take a few tries to find out what people like, but after a while you just kinda get it.
