"You guys are all hating on the M5. You know what? It's the best magic tool I've ever come across."
It's the only magic tool you've ever come across!
Oh, and "Robert Giobannini"? It's "Giobbi!"

On reflection, it's very mean spirited to make fun of this young guy and push him away from magic. Many beginners go through a phase like this, and they need to be pushed into the right direction and encouraged, not shot down and told to die and give up magic forever.
I'm very guilty of this, as are some other specific magicians. But I've been taught an important lesson and I think it's something we should all remember and think about next time we see someone like this.

Glad I wasn't the one that had to pop in and say it like the last time everyone here decided to bash some beginner's YouTube video. Beginners are just learning and you must remember what it was like when you were. In fact, most everyone on Magicanada is still in the beginner phase or hardly out of it.

Reuben and I have both given him words of encouragement and some good resources to get him started on the right path.

Michael, Reuben was cursing at him on every video!
I would have told him about more resources, but it pissed me off that he thought something "sucked" because it was too difficult.

That was annoying and is what set Reuben off. Reuben and I have both apologized to the guy and have offered him some encouragements and good resources to get him going on the right track.

Teddy,
I guess my response to you is- what gives YOU the right to criticize?
Either help or shut up. But don't bash him, especially not in public.

I didn't post anything remotely critical on his videos.

I apologize.

Reuben and I posted some comments and sent messages of encouragement to the young guy, giving him soem good resources and trying to help turn him in the right direction. I got a reply from a third party saying something along the lines of:
"When I was 7, I was in love with magic and wanted to learn everything I could. This guy doesn't have a genuine interest, he just wanted to buy a box of miracles."

Do you really care that this kid just wants a box of miracles? Who doesn't when they are young and first introduced to magic? You have to explore it for a while before you can possibly develop enough of an understanding of it in order to develop a passion for it. And who are you or anyone to tell him it's not okay to think something sucks because it's hard? He's entitled to his opinion as much as anyone on Magicanada is entitled to post theirs.
Michael, I recall you stating that Tarbell is outdated and basically that there's nothing useful in it, and that was less than a year ago. Were you not entitled to that opinion? You sure thought so because you defended it to the death, or at least until you couldn't take the pressure of the Cafe anymore and decided to take a small hiatus to think about your own magic.
There's probably hundreds of thousands of bad videos of beginner magicians on YouTube, and 10x as many posts criticizing how bad they are. Do you guys really want to be just like all those "magicians" who apparently have nothing better to do than shoot down beginners?
Sure, maybe you guys later sent him some encouragement after you publicly bashed him, but that doesn't even remotely take away the fact that it happened and has happened before. Let's think about what we really care about here.

You're right, Brian. Now I consider Tarbell to be some of the greatest books I own! A few of the routines are even in my act today!
We weren't thinking, just kind of went along with the crowd on that one. Clearly we shouldn't have... it was however surprising to see some particular people posting negatively on his videos... even some working pros whose names will not be mentioned.

It does depend on what we think. I have made a few small critial remarks, but have also sent a message telling him that if he is really serious about magic, There are many of us who will be GLAD to help him, but he will have to practice and train hard. Magic comes from Practice and Experience. Something that only time can provide. To have a passion means that NOTHING is too hard. You just have to put your mind to it. If a layperson asks him to do something and he says, "no I cant, its too hard!" No one will take him seriously. If he cannot take critisism from these guys on the net, how will he deal with Hecklers? They will eat him alive. I agree that he need guidance, but you can lead the horse to water...
Michael shoulds remember how much trouble I went through and got into defending him with certain issues in the past. If a youngster is really serious, and can show me that they is serious, I will not give up on them.
