The Blaine Deck

A hopefully original effect of mine, been searching in books and on the internet, appears to be original. I expect a thrashing from Ben about the video, but I wanted it up for a reason. Enjoy!

What? Only Ben can thrash?

Very interesting idea (though it should probably have been called the Balducci deck). While you're certainly not the first to levitate something in the palm(s) of the hand, without knowing exactly what you're doing, I can't speak to originality. Though I've certainly never seen it applied to a deck of cards in the box.

The classical method (which I believe is attributed to Leipzig) involves secretly having a pin lodged in the skin of the hand. Of course magicians of that era were more willing to suffer for their art.

Three comments I'll give about the handling (again, without knowing exactly what you're doing).

1. The way you hold yourself (shoulders, elbows, eye contact) betray that what you're doing is angle sensitive. (It gives the feeling that if only you were there in person you could just figure it out by taking two steps to the left)

2. There's some movement of your right hand towards the end which seems to be tied to the motion of the deck. I can't really explain it better than that other than to say read Al Schneider on Zombie.

3. It's not actually all that clear what the effect is. If you hadn't named the video after Blaine, I might not have been able to tell that the case was supposed to be floating.

That being said it has the potential to be developed into a nifty little piece of webcam magic.

Thanks LIVR, don't know if that was a bad or good comment, but thanks either way.

I understand the concept of my body language during it, definetely should be different, its something I just recently created and thought it had potential, so I posted it fast so somebody else couldn't steal it. Agai, not sure if it's 100% original, but it is impromptu, no pins in the hand (damn, that would kill!)

The effect was made for close up, not webcam, and I've performed it in person, still fools the hell out of people. Somebody thought I was using Loops, they said "Wow that's so obvious-- you're using loops"

And I started to laugh. But it's a good thing I guess. Thanks LIVR!

I just remembered,

I was using that awkward pose thing, like my elbows out and my hands up because I wanted the camera to see under the deck, I couldn't angle the webcam correctly so that it wasn't all shadowy.
Michael Kras

Daniel Garcia, Paul Harris, Steve Fearson, and Jay Sankey all have similar methods. However, all are mostly different in execution. So far, I'm sure your safe Reuben! I'll look into more.
Reuben The Great

SWEET!

Mike, go on msn!!!
teddy

I might have figured it out... If I did, it was because you held it levitating too long. This should probably be a quick lift where people cannot decide if it really happened, and they cannot observe too long and figure it out how it is done.
Reuben The Great

yes youre right, I actually slo-moed that part of the video to see the levitation quicker, it seemed too fst in regular speed. Ironic, isn't it.

How did you like it though?

I think it has potential.
Ben Train

Yup, that's what magic is all about- going fast enough that people aren't sure what the hell just happened.

happy holidays,
Ben

I agree with you Ben, was a little thrown off by that comment, so "people don't know what happened, if its real or not" although I did do it a bit too fast, which is why i slo-mowed it.

Happy Hannukah Ben!
Michael Kras

LOL. I like the idea Reuben, but the big gap between your hands could be off-putting and lead to false theories.
Reuben The Great

Gap between my hands:S theres no gap.
Michael Kras

The big open space just after your hand... it almost looks like you're using all of your fingertips to lift the card box. Maybe it was just the angle or hand positions.

It was all right. I'm not one for levitations, but if it's more angle-friendly than I think, then I'm impressed.

Oh, and thank you Ben for summing up what I meant.

Ben seemed sarcastic to me...
"Yup, that's what magic is all about- going fast enough that people aren't sure what the hell just happened. "

youtube is being stupid at the moment, but if a levitation cant be held for a good length of time then the effect almost isnt there anymore... if you can make the deck float, you would just do it for a split second
Reuben The Great

So your verdict Liam?

PS> Teddy, I've made it extremely angle friendly now, viewable almost completely from the front.

If he was being sarcastic, then I must look like an idiot... But were you being sarcastic, Ben?

And Reuben (I finally remembered to tell you that I love Reuben sandwiches), I wish I could see it live, but it sounds pretty good!
Ben Train

I was being Ben.

Whatever the heck that means.

Ruben, keep playing with it.  Right now I'm not a fan but who the fuck knows- maybe you'll make it into something sweet, then I'll have to buy it to figure it out.

I'll leave you with the words my grandfather once told me: "sjdhdksjgfdkhglgjdkgdflkgd".

Damn- that old guy was insane.

Ben
Reuben The Great

Thanks for the support Ben.

You had a wise grandfather, almost the exact words i live by. The levitation is coming along beautifully!
