Take a breather Mr. MagicianHey everyone. There were no posts in this particular area yet so I thought I would get things going. The purpose of this thread was to call attention to the fact that magicians, and especially working pros including myself, get so caught up in the world of performing and the business of magic that we often forget to have a life outside of magic. I encourage everyone to make sure you have at least one other developed interest outside of magic, spend if not as much, at least a good deal of time pursuing that interest. We all need something to take our mind off of magic once in a while and thus having a dedicated hobby outside of it can be a great way to relax. This is especially useful for creators who get stuck in a rut with creating.
So in spirit of relaxing, what are your hobbies outside of magic?
I'll go first - music. I perform, write, record and produce music. I play in two different bands, one in Oneonta and one in Buffalo. In the past I have worked a great deal in live sound, though I mostly spend my time as an audio tech doing studio recordings when I'm not writing my own music or performing with a live act. Anyone interested in hearing some of my solo work, aka not with my bands, can do so by going to www.myspace.com/MusicOfBrianMiller
Okay so let's hear it from everyone else!

Very nice topic, and your absolutely right! When I'm not all about the magic, I enjoy:
Acting- I have been in a few small productions and have also play a big part in the production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Singing- Actually, no way. NEVER let me start singing. I'm horrible, and for some reason, when I start I can't stop. The Beatles really get me going.
Filmmaking- It's been a while, but I used to film low-budget movies with unique special effect techniques then edit them into short films. Tons of fun
Writing- I love to write, especially short stories. In fact, I have a great story that is magic-based that I may post sometime.
Motovational Speaking- For some reason, this idea is a lot of fun. I love to speak for crowds, it is one of my favourite things about magic.
Stand-Up Comedy- Currently trying to write some material, and this has always been one of my future ambitions.
Juggling- Just a hobby of mine, and I am probably never going to use it for public entertainment purposes.
It's amazing I have time for all of this stuff, but somehow I manage.

That's a very wise ambition, even if you never actually perform the material as stricly stand-up comedy. My comedy magic show has bits and pieces of stand-up material that I've written used as segueways or transitional material. I've written a great deal of stand-up material that I simply don't use because I'm not doing stand-up comedy alone. What I'm starting to do is allow a very good friend of mine and fantastic up and coming stand-up comedian to use any of my material he chooses and fit it to his personality. It would be nice to see it being used instead of much of it that goes to waste, or I only "perform" for groups of friends randomly.

In my spare time I:
Ride Mt.bikes with a team extreme faith racing.
Claymation and stop animation are something I just started doing.
Skateboarding is a must for me.
And I love listening to music, mostly christian metal, hard rock, and a little of alternative.
Run the sound at my church.
