New Creation: The Teresa LevitationPlease everybody, keep this underground is possible, I want it a complete secret. A creation of mine while practicing ripping up cards from an old deck; I came upon something extremely neat, and invisible.
The effect: A card levitates an inch above the top of the deck. If you watch the end of http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=TG32uLYRV-M it sort of looks like that, but WAY more fair. You can look right underneath the card. I have about 4 handlings, on the go handling, unprepared setup, the gimmick, etc. It looks incredibly fair, better than Eggink's in the video as it levitates higher and is done on a completely flat hand (and of course can be shown under the card). Tell me what you guys think!
I will show Michael when we jam (hopefully on tomorrow if he contacts me!)
I believe this is my real break in creating magic, I've finally got a winner!
And, it's viewable from almost every angle, there is nothing to hide. In the end, there is nothing to ditch; no palming, no cover-ups, everything is examinable. And no, when you find out the method, you won't go AWW THAT'S A LET DOWN!

This sounds like an old Floating Card marketed by Royal Magic.... hopefully, it isn't. It sounds very interesting, for sure, and I'd love to see it.

Reuben The Great
|
GO ON MSN MIKE! i'LL SHOW YOU!
|
Reuben The Great
|
I looked it up. No TT's.
I have to talk to you about jamming, how about tomorrow, Neighbours? I can show you the effect, I wish to fool you badly with it
|
Michael Kras
|
The Royal Magic one doesn't use a TT either.
Tomorrow, Neighbours? I'll get back to you on that.
And I can't go on MSN, there's someone stalking me who won't let up.... he's been bugging my sister for hours and if I sign on, I will be bombarded.
|
Reuben The Great
|
Just sign on and block him quickly, I have to talk to you, and I REALLY want to show you this. If one is not original, a handling will be, because they're different.
|
Reuben The Great
|
Well then pm me the method you think at least.
|
Michael Kras

I'm on.... you're not.... I'm off.

Ok everybody, here is the video for it.

Tell me what you think!
And it's the Cyndi Levitation now, my mom gave me the soul idea for the...well, you'll find out later. Something with the trick. So I wanted to give her a bit more credit
|
Michael Kras
|
DANG this looks good! Many of Reuben's creations have yet to positively wow me but I am full ready to admit that I am positively wowed. The illusion is near perfect and not a word of Reuben's "ad copy" is a lie... you CAN see directly under the card and it looks INSANE!
|
Reuben The Great
|
Thank you Mike! After y'all have seen it, I'll tell you the history and how it came to be. There were literally 12 prototype ideas before it became that.
AGain, here is the video for anbody who missed it- http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=37NLGmoXd8M&fmt=8

That'll be why you're posting on a public forum, eh?
|
Reuben The Great
|
Yes, that might not have been the smartest idea.
What are your thoughts though? I was going to post it into free magic so random people can't see but...
|
Michael Kras
|
Reuben, most of the members have Free Magic access... in fact, if anybody doesn't and you think you should, PM me and I will set it straight.
And Mr. Dickson, although this forum is public it's still kind of private... a google search for Magic Forum will not produce this as the main search topic by any stretch. So, in terms of it being kind of hidden, it is pretty private.

Ok everybody, so on theory11, someone has contacted me about MARKETING MY EFFECT!
www.thementalplayground.com
here is the message:
Hi Reuben,
I just saw your post about your levitation effect. After watching the video, I was very impressed.
I am the owner, and producer for Mental Playground Productions. We just released Reality Check and Urban Legend by Michael Paul, with much more on the way.
Check out the site: www.thementalplayground.com
I am very interested in your effect. Would you be interested in releasing it with us? We would have it professionally shot, with top notch equipment. It would be featured on our site as a download, and possibly a DVD.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Brian Rodgers
Mental Playground Productions
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
|
BrianMillerMagic
|
Brian Rodgers is a very respectable fellow and has already made quite a name for himself in the magic DVD industry. I will be releasing my first DVD through him with Mental Playground Productions. So you ought not be concerned with his integrity or quality of work. What you ought to be concerned with is whether or not you want to release something so young, and something that is potentially not even close to being perfected yet. I am making no judgments, just saying what needs to be said. You can always do a "poor man's copyright" if you're worried about protecting your original work and holding off on releasing it (write it up in detail and mail it to yourself through the post office).
|
Reuben The Great
|
I mean, releasing it would be great for me, I want a name in magic. I will hold off a bit on it though, as early releases aren't looked too greatly upon so I'm told. Also, I want to perfect it more, incorporate more routines, and Brian, if you can't see the video (because it may be private) tell me, and I'll send it to you.
If you DID see it, what did you think?
|
Michael Kras
|
Haha, Brian is absolutely right. I didn't even think of releasing The Destiny Effect until I had worked on it for a year solid of performance, developments, analysis, thorough instruction, etc. It turned out to be a success. Prior to that, my attempts to release got me in A LOT of trouble, almost to the point where my magic reputation almost disappeared and the magic community in general had a negative view of me. I worked through it and proved myself... Brian can vouch for ALL of this. Be careful.
|
Reuben The Great
|
Yes but this effect is COMPLETELY different thatn Destiny. Yours needed more analysis and handlings. Mine is a visual levitation, very very different.
I have improved it so much now that it is completely invisible from about two feet away. I'm talking restaurant magic and closer.
Once it's completely done I'm going to write up an ebook for my own reference of how to make it, do it, performance tips, analysis, history, eveyrthing. He said he wanted to do a DVD or instant download, so how would my book of operations for the levitation matter?

Generally speaking people only listen to the advice they want to hear, so I assume this will fall on deaf ears-
I agree with Brian. Be wary about releasing something so new- which is a departure from my previous stance that you shouldn't release something while you are young. You want to make a name for yourself, cool, I hear that, but do you want to make a BAD one? If you release a shoddy effect people will associate "Ruben" with smart-ass-thinks-hes-so-much-better-then-he-is-little-punk-etc....
Those are the kind of guys NOT invited to jam sessions, who don't get into the private parties at conventions, and who miss out on the fun stuff. It's sucky.
What makes something shoddy? A lot of factors. In your case, you simply haven't spent enough time with this to a) have a strong presentation, b) audience tested it enough- and gotten back feedback and c) a TON of other factors.
But, this is all speculation. Maybe you have something awesome- dunno, couldn't see the video. But even if it IS awesome: why not wait? Work on it while building hype?
But again- speculation.
Ben

Brian: What's your email address?

Ben is right... I went down this road before and it was hard getting out.
|
Reuben The Great
|
Hey Ben, appreciate your comment, was waiting for it.
See, my thinking is, I really, really do not want to be the know it all kid, I just want to be the kid I am-- someone who adores magic, loves jam sessions, loves to create magic.
I mean, mostly the reason I want to release it is so that people can actually perform it-- I know there aren't too any great levitating cards out there without threads, magnets, etc. And I do believe that people won't say "oh this was a let down,"etc. because the levitation is not like that in the slightest. Mike can vouch for that. Ben, would you like me to send you the video for reference anyway?
I hope all goes well. I will listen to your guys advice, but I really do want something to come of this. Again, I want a name in magic, but a good one, not a bad one. I wouldn't think about releasing it for a good couple months or so so I can perform it live for people, type of a manuscript of tips on performance, routines, etc. I want to release it just not too soon.
Thoughts? Ben, message me, the youtube video is private because I took it down for now.
|
Michael Kras

You have all the time in the world to make a name for yourself... it has taken me almost 9 years to become something in magic and it took a lot of work, especially after trying to release some underdeveloped ideas, stuff I'd only worked on for a month or two inconsistently. The results were near disastrous and it took me a long time to be accepted as somewhat of a peer. You've not been in magic for even 2 years yet. For someone to make a name for himself with only 2 years behind him would have to be a prodigy.
|
Reuben The Great
|
Well, think about it.
What were you like when you were two years into magic? Did you create something like I did?
If you did you would have probably had a huge name for yourself. If you created the destiny effect when you were two years into magic and released as you did, bam, you'e a prodigy, no?
Not saying I'm a prodigy, lol, just saying that I'm proud that after only 2 years I've created something really cool. It's not near done yet though, so I have lots of time to improve it.

When I was two years into magic, I was 9 years old. I didn't begin creating until I was 13, because I STARTED EARLY, earlier than most young magicians do. Even Ben only started when he was around 13 or 14, correct? I've been "into magic" for a long as Ben, but am not nearly as good or knowledgable. Because he began at a reasonable age, when I was seven and startd doing magic at school for my Grade One Class, I could barely hold a deck of cards.
The gimmick, although used differently, is nearly identical to a levitation I owned years ago. To your credit, you use it in a different way but just the similarities between the two could cause MAJOR problems. Magicians have a hard time accepting effects of similar method (as they should).
Just keep working on it!
|
Reuben The Great
|
Mike, I think you're becoming a bit hostile towards me.
We've had a HUGE discussion about the similarity to the gimmick, in fact, I HAVE ONE, and they are not the same at all. Maybe the same material or close to it, but not the same at all.
I'm planning to tell a few trusted people the method and see if they would test it out in their presentation environment. Brian, and Ben, I would love if you tried it out (if you'd like, not forcing you to!) After a while, of many performances and improvments, maybe THEN can I release it.
I will try that poor mans copyright or whatever, how does that even work? I don't want to end up getting it stolen or ending up how Mike started, so I think this is my best opportunity. But, what I do not want to do, is release it when I'm a lot older. This poses the problem of, "how will I be able to get a name for anybody to even know me then?
|
Michael Kras
|
Upon reflection of my past few posts, I have realized how arrogant I have sounded throughout the discussion of this topic. I can sometimes use incorrect words to express myself and come across as a know-it-all or self proclaimed magic expert. I am none of these. In addition to apologizing for my recent behaviour, I would also like to add that, to completely contradict what I have said previously, I do not know what I'm doing in this matter. Sure, I have gone through bad experiences with trying to release half-baked ideas, but it's not for me to say that I have completely evolved and am now ready to tackle the big guns as well as being able to "hitch on with the best of them". I did not intentionally come across this way, nor did I intend to imply superiority to anybody here or anywhere else.
Good luck with your new idea Reuben, and be sure to pay attention to the guys who know what they are talking about. I've received my share of advice that is genuinely priceless, stuff that I could have easily been charged to learn.
However, although it's not for me to say, why do you assume that your idea would/will get stolen?
|
Ben Train
|
The poor man's copyright, as Brian mentioned, is this:
you've mailed yourself a letter which is sealed and stamped by the postal service. It's also dated.
Which means if someone releases the same idea you can then show them the letter, open it, and establish you had the idea first.
The problem is in magic that whoever releases first usually wins. You might get a mention, but he gets all the credit.
Ben
p.s.
I started when I was 8, bought some tricks and fake dog poop (puff cigs, hand buzzers, etc) but then quit. Started again when I was 16, and ended up working as a demonstrator and Canada's Wonderland for Browser's that same year. Spent some time working, quit when I was 18, started again when I was 19. Now I'm 23. So, I've been doing magic on and off again for 15 years, 2 months of which I've done it seriously.
Why you need to know that I don't know. Losers.
P.p.s.
The best reason to wait is that you are for SURE going to come up with better presentations, better handlings, and other ideas using the gimick. Why release a project unless you can make it awesome? At some point, of course, you'll have to let it go- but not before you're sure you haven't missed something MAJOR.
p.p.p.s.
Got nuts?

Reuben The Great

Yes, I am definetely having second thoughts about releasing it soon.
But what if someone releases it and bam, my idea is gone? I get no credit?
And how do people know (for the poor man's copyright) that you didn't just have the date on it and eveyrthing and seal it when the copy was released to say it was yours? (if you hadn't really created it or something)
|
Ben Train
|
the post office dates it.
Thanks Brian.
|
Michael Kras
|
If someone releases it, contact them and prove your involvement in the effect. More often than not (if the person is at all a respectable individual) you will at least be credited.
|
Ben Train
|
what are the chances someone will come up with the same idea?
Calm down son.
Plus, if you've spent the time, you'll have come up with things he hasn't. So, you release yours after sharing with the person you had the idea first and getting his consent.
