Music, or none?

What are your thought's on music during your act: when to use it, how often, what type, lyrics or none, climactic or intense music?

My mentor (a very good stage performer, as Mike knows) tells me he likes to start off with a quick music act, and he tells me about the first quarter to half of his show is music (with an introduction after his first opening). He says coming out to music and wowing them before you speak to them is crucial, and a great way to start.

I saw Mike do an REM song to D'lites at our club, a non-climactic song, basically the same thing the entire way, but it fit perfectly.

How you ask?

Well...tell me!

I use REM's song for my D'lite... it's a nice, calm, background song that does not at all draw away from the magic. Like Reuben says, it fits perfectly. I close my kid's shows with it.

I use a lot of Cirque Du Soliel in my acts, I also use Porcelain by Moby for my "Stormy Night" act and it fits perfectly. I rarely ever use music with lyrics, I find they distract and just do not work for me. Porcelain is one exception, but even then the lyrics are limited.
