Mercuring by Jay Sankey

MERCURING

Effect: The magician visually pulls a solid finger ring through one finger and melts it onto another finger simultaneously! The ring can be immediately examined. Many effects are also possible.

Cost: Roughly $15-$20 for the Mercuring gimmicks and a nicely made instructional DVD.

Review: There has been a lot of controversy about Mercuring... about the ring itself or just the fact that people flat-out don't like it. I disagree with every argument out there. Mercuring can be carried along with you and takes up VERY little pocket space... even less if you are wearing the ring. For me, it is the perfect walkaround quickie to do, especially if you "just notice" you are wearing your rare ring made of stabilized Mercury. You then go into the effect from there, and it is SO strong.

Also, about the ring itself. Not to be rude, but what are you all talking about? In my opinion, the ring is quite nice, light-weight and really looks good. I don't know everyone's issues with it, but it is fine in my opinion, especially with a mere $15 price tag. What did you expect, a Gold Plated Wedding Band? I like it, it looks great on me, and it fits me like a glove. I wear it frequently with the gimmick in my pocket and I am always ready to do it. The ring also comes in a variety of sizes, and the one I bought fit me absolutely perfectly... not too loose and definitely not too tight. Perfect. Of course, many of you will not find this, but I did.

The effect is VERY strong, and with the appropriate patterline can be very shocking when thrown out there at a moment's notice. It is very visual and the ring can be immediately examined by spectators. I also just love to perform it for myself as I love practicing it. For some strange reason, accomplishing the full effect really feels physically good. Call me crazy, but it just does. You can do Mercuring as a quickie effect or opener, or as a full routine as explained on the instructional DVD.

The DVD is very nicely made, and Jay always goes all-out for his single effect DVDs. He includes a few different handlings, great subtleties and really give you your money's worth. Honestly, for anyone to spend as long as he does on a DVD explaining everything about an effect like this is a fantastic thing to do, and for that I applaud Jay. He really gets into everything and doesn't just bring it up momentarily but actually spends as long as it takes to cover every little detail. The extra handlings included are good, and I love his way of making the ring penetrate a spectator's finger. I haven't tried it yet but you can be assured that I will soon. Just overall the DVD is a stellar project, and even includes some fantastic Sankey product demos. I as a hardcore Sankey fan love this little bonus in his DVDs. Actually, I disliked Mercuring up until I put the DVD into the player. It just goes to show you to never trust a first impression. After watching the DVD I grew to love Mercuring.

Astounding reactions, a clever method, nicely-made props, fantastic DVD, this is truly the real deal.

Overall I give Jay Sankey's Mercuring an 8/10. Restaurant and walkaround performers will love this to bits, just as I did. Everything is so well put-together, and that's what makes Mercuring a winner. Highly recommended.
