Here's Another Challenge For You

Propose a working method for the effect described below... doesn't matter how impractical the method is as long as it would work.

Any object is borrowed.... could be a card, coin, business card, matchbook, pen, anything! The magician gently lays it on the table, and holds his hands about 6 inches above it. Suddenly, he sharply snaps his fingers upon which the object visually just GOES, completely vanishes with no cover or funny moves. You snap, it's there, then it's gone, nothing fishy.

Let's hear your ideas!

Mike,

This may not be the best thing to try and start a conversation about.

First, the challenge is REALLY REALLY hard.  Like, something that only a handful of guys in history have ever been able to even SORT OF do.

Second, if we DID have a method, we would either keep it a secret or publish/release it.

Hmm, I didn't think this to be such an "underground" style concept.

Pretty much what I was thinking.  If there were a workable method for what you just described, chances are it would be mass produced for profit or we will never, ever hear about it because whoever came up with it is keeping it to themselves.  If I came up with such a method, I definitely wouldn't be sharing it on a public magic forum, let alone even with close friends probably.

There comes a time when we have to realize what is and what is not within the realm of possibility for a real world workable effect, considering of course that what we do is give the illusion of the impossible.

And if you have some kind of solution to this, I would advise you to hang on to it for yourself, for a long, long time if not forever.  Seriously.

Generally speaking, you want something with many viable solutions, which we can then argue about.

Not impossible- rather, the opposite.

Here's a few... Smile

If snapping your fingers is absolutely necessary, then you can probably time it and get it in nicely using these methods.

Method 1:

The object contains a magnet, and the table is rigged with a relatively strong magnet underneath. The magnet under the table is attached to a piece of elastic which is taught.

When performing, using your foot under the table, you release the rig, and the magnet underneath shoots the object rapidly into your stomach. It then lands on the ground.

Provided that you properly conditioned the spectator (by giving them earmuffs), they should not hear this, and so it should appear that the object just vanishes.

Method 2:

To prepare, take a photograph of the table with nothing on it.

Have the photograph palmed in your right hand. To vanish the object, quickly produce the photograph and hold it in front of the spectator's eyes. With your left hand, pull the object of the table, then quickly flip the photograph back out of the spectators view.

Normally, simply blocking a spectator's view would be too obvious, but the use of a photograph subliminally makes them think they were looking at the table the whole time.

Method 3:

Have a gun copped in your left hand. If the object is light enough, a bullet shot should whip it away fast enough such that it appears to simply vanish.
Make sure you wear goggles in case you accidentally shoot yourself.

Method 4:

This method can only be used to vanish a drop of water. Drip a small amount of water onto the table, and carefully hold your hands about 6 inches above it. Tell the audience that you will now vanish it, then tell them a load of rubbish about how the particles do something sciencey and it makes it disappear. Make sure you go into a lot of detail. If you take long enough doing this, the water will evaporate, seemingly vanishing into thin air.
