Frixion Pens

Do you own one of these? If not, I suggest you go out to the nearest office supply store and pick some up. Frixion Pens are pens with ink that completely vanishes when exposed to extreme heat, typically a lighter. This thread is devoted to ideas using this wonderful tool. Here is one of mine.

Liquid Dreams

Effect: A prediction card is removed at the very beginning. It is drawn on the underside of a business card and has not been seen yet. The spectator is asked to select a card from the deck… let’s assume the card is the King Of Diamonds. The magician turns over the business card to reveal a massive scribble of black ink. He explains that this represents every card in the deck… the scribble is a mixture of curved lines, straight lines, and bent lines, and many of them could be combined to form the image of a card. He simply states that he will melt the ink and try to form the scribble into an image that the spectator should recognize. His actions suit his words as he removed a lighter, lights it, and holds it under the business card. The card is gently shaken and the ink on it is seen to visibly melt and rearrange itself into a “K” and a diamond, a perfect duplication of the spectator’s own selected card!

Set-Up: On the blank side of your business card, draw a rather rough, thick, and scribbled image of a “K” and a diamond. The image should be rough, but should still be easy to read. The ink this is drawn in should be exactly the same colour and shade as the ink on your Frixion Pen. Now, take your Frixion pen and scribble thickly over top of the etched symbols. It should look just like a large scribble and none of the symbols should be visual. Be sure you have a deck of cards and a lighter on you, and you are ready!

Method: Remove the prediction, being careful not to flash the underside and prematurely reveal what you have drawn. Table this, and remove a deck of cards. You will now force the King Of Diamonds on your spectator using your favourite method… the more effective and fair your force method is, the stronger the effect will be.

After the card is forced, have it returned to the deck and, if you wish, have the deck shuffled thoroughly. Dramatically turn over the prediction on the table and reveal the scribble. Explain that the scribble represents every card in the deck and that you will melt the ink and reform it into an image you hope they will recognize. As you say this, remove the lighter from your pocket, light it and position it under the business card. Gently shake the card as the back comes in contact with the flame, and it will give the stunning illusion of the ink melting and reforming into the image of their selected card. This is a killer moment, so let it sink in, then give the spectator your business card as a souvenir.

Nice Idea Mike!

Your effect sounds great! Where can I get this pen and how much does it cost?
Michael Kras

They cost about $6 at many office supply stores, or online.
teddy

Wow, that's cheap! I was expecting $30 or more.
Michael Kras

The most expensive I have seen them is $20, and that is when Mathieu Bich marketed them as the Sympathetink pen... I bought them without realizing the pens existed anywhere else.

Any ideas what the pen or the pen concept?
Liam

the best idea i've come up with:
On a black page, you have a drawing of a seed
say that this would have grown into a beutiful plant, if only it had gotten more light.
Hold a lighter up to it, and you can watch the plant grow!
then hand it out

method:
outline full grown plant in a pot on a page
fill in the outside of the outline with normal black marker
you could colour in the plant if you feel, with a normal pen, and colour the pot brown.
Now with this fancy pen, fill in where you drew the plany, except on the pot, leave the shape of a seed
now with some practice and presentation, you could make the inc disappear and make it seem like the plant is growing

A very creative idea there! I like it! Any other ideas from anybody else?

Another idea:

Ouch!

Effect: On the magician’s business card, a small dot is drawn at the edge with a pen… the ink is rubbed and is indeed dry. A lighter is removed and the blazing hot flame is held right under the drawn dot… instantly that dot is seen to jump right across the business card and land on the other side, almost as if shocked by the intense heat! The dot even repeats this again, jumping right across the business card yet another time. The third time, the dot completely and visually vanishes, only to be found hiding on the other side of the card! Finally, fed up, the magician puts the dot into a trance state and a spectator is invited to light the lighter and try to move it. This time, the dot remains stationary, and everything may be completely examined.

Set-Up: The set-up required is as follows. Turn your business card over so the blank side is facing upwards, on the table. Take your Frixion pen and draw a dot, no bigger than a Tylenol pill, on the lower left corner of the card. Draw another dot of the exact same size and shape in the upper right corner of the card. Finally, turn the business card over and on the printed side, draw the same sort of dot in REAL pen with ink that matches the ink in your Frixion pen on the right edge. This ink is, of course, permanent and is used for the climax. Place this card in your pocket so that when it is removed, the card will be in the same position as when the dots were drawn. You are ready!
Method: To begin, remove the business card from your pocket, with the printed side out toward the spectators. Your fingertips should be covering the drawn dot on the front of the card. Pull out your Frixion pen, and put the card on the table with the blank side up. However, as you do this, your left index finger and thumb will be covering the two dots and the bottom left and upper right corners of the card. This is done under the guise of pinning the card to the table for stability. Draw an identical dot on the lower right corner with the Frixion Pen. Continue to pin the card down as you reach into your pocket and hand the spectator your lighter. Give it to her, and ask her to flick it a few times to make sure it works. As she does so, pick up the card off the table, pinching it between thumb and forefinger of the right AND left hands… left hand on the bottom left corner and right hand on the upper right. The fingers holding the card are, of course, concealing the pre-drawn dots further.

Ask the spectator to light the lighter and hold the flame. Come above the flame with your business card, positioning the flame directly below the freshly drawn dot on the lower right corner. It will instantly vanish upon contact with the heat so immediately give the card a small shake after letting go of the lower left corner with the left hand. This exposes the second dot and, if done correctly, it should look as though the dot instantly “jumped” across the business card. When doing this, make sure the flames does not come in contact with any of the concealed dots, as they will also instantly disappear and that is obviously not wanted.

Ask the spectator to relight the lighter, and come down over the flame yet again positioning the flame directly under the second dot. It should instantly vanish, and this occurs while gently shaking the business card. As the dot vanishes, move your right thumb downward slightly until the third dot is fully exposed. Yet again, it appears as though the dot has magically jumped across the card.

The third phase is most clean and most surprising. It will appear as though the dot simply just vanishes when exposed to the flame, and is suddenly discovered impossibly on the other side of the business card. To do this, simply proceed as before by asking the spectator to once again light the lighter… come over the flame with the business card again, and this time it appears as though the dot completely vanishes when exposed to the heat. Act confused for a moment, then turn over the business card to show the dot’s third and final hiding place. Allow the spectator to keep the business card.
Liam

i really need to get one of these pens!
as for your effect micheal, i would put the dot on the front (permanent one) on the exact other side of the final one that vanishes, so it seems as though the dot goes through the card
