Cell Phone Vanish

Well, I've been talking to Steve Fearson at Emagicsupply about what my next release will be. Here's the most likely candidate:

Cell Phone Vanisher (aka Cell-o-fake)

Effect: A spectator's cell phone is borrowed, covered with a hankerchief, and placed out of the way. The magician has the spectator sign a sealed envelope, then returns the envelope to his pocket. The magician now returns to the phone covered by the hank, slowly flattening the hank causing the phone to vanish - but it's not over. . . The magician removes the signed and sealed envelope from his pocket, which seems to have put on some weight. He hands the envelope to a spectator to open, the phone is found sealed inside!

Before you ask:
There is NO SLEEVING.
There is NO TOPIT.
It can be performed with/without a jacket.
You need no assistance.
The phone is really borrowed, not a plant.
It can be performed with almost any cell phone.
It can be performed with other items as well - wallets, decks of cards, etc.
Friendly angles.

Gimmcks:
Easy build, I can't image it taking someone more than an hour.

Utility:
You WILL use this effect. If you don;'t want to use it on cell phones that's fine, but you WILL use it. The possibilities are truely limitless.

Sounds awesome Dustin! Any other possible candidates? I look forward to seeing and reviewing this one in the future!

Bleeding Hearts is still hovering in the background. I had released the effect a long time ago, but pulled it since it wasn't as good as it could be. When I finally re-release it, it will allow you to cut your arm (hand, leg etc.) with a borrowed knife, credit card, spoon, whatever you feel like cutting yourself with - then heal your wound leaving a visible scar.

I want to make sure the handling works as well as it should before I release it though.

I've also got a group of effects that I don't think are appropriate to be released by themselves. I'll likely combine several of them into an ebook to be released together.
Currently on the compilaton book list are:
Signed Card to Spectator's Wallet
Money Market: Borrowed Bill to Business Card
With Love: Magical Messages Appear On Valentine Candy
Billiard Prediction: A freely chosen ball lands on the magician's predicted card.

Not long from now I'll also be releasing a book of build it yourself magic. On-body Smoke Generator, easy to make prop carriers, even a portable stage.

That all sounds fantastic!! I am especially intrigued by Bleeding Hearts. I hope you release that soon!

A question: Does it require a gimmick? How much time and money will have to be invested into its construction?

I'm not sure if you're asking about Bleeding Hearts' Gimmick or The Cell-o-fake gimmick.

Bleeding Hearts:
There is a gimmick, but it's both unassuming and cheap. Construction of the gimmick is very simple and is limmitted to items that any magician would have lying around (90% of the gimmick is office supply level).

They where meant to be disposable (though they can be reused) and will cost about 2 cents each. Once you understand the construction and have the materials, it should take no more than 30 seconds to build an extra gimmck.

Cell-o-fake:
Yes there is a gimmick, but it is also unassuming and cheap.
The gimmick will cost about $5 to build if you don't have any of the materials around - though the average person does. It will probably take 10 minuted to build the gimmick.

Sounds awesome, thanks for clearing it up! Any other thoughts from anyone?

I posted a performance video of Cell-o-phake on youtube.

Since I don't have a spectator to work with, it doesn't look as cool as it could, but you'll get the idea.

Cell-o-phake

2 Notes:
Crank your speakers up, it's pretty quiet.
Yes, the pauses and forgetting things are all scripted. It's part of my close-up persona' (you should see what I do with googly eyes).

Looks like a good effect! I am eager to hceck this one out.

im only playing devils advocate, but couldnt you technically just palm off the cell phone into a pocket when getting the hank, and then bam you're pretty much done. for the deflating hank, it could be a number of ways, just a piece that deflates attached to the underside of the hank. JUST PLAYING DEVILS ADV, but im extremely interested in this:D

1: Look up the definition of Devil's Advocate.

2: Since the effect will work with a cell phone of any size (hence why it can be borrowed), an inflating and deflating piece wouldn't work, since it can't change shape.

3: Since deflation requires inflation, you'd need to reinflate the hank before every use - which would be VERY conspicuous.

4: My method can also be used to vanish a wallet, deck of cards, glasses, etc.

I've seen a demo and it looks great!

I didn't post the demo did I?

there ya' go.

Note: I suck at making youtube videos. I am accuatome to working with actual humans not cameras.
