Best Impromptu Revelation of a Selected Card

What is your favourite card revelation? I'm sure we've all had sudden performance requests and blank out somewhat, and in a pinch many of us would perform some sort of selection and revelation effect. But the question is, HOW do you reveal? What is your preferred method?

Whenever I resort to this type of effect, I typically do a "pulse" revelation by feeling the pulse in the spectator's wrist, and reciting the 13 card values as I do... since I already know the identity of the card (naturally), I can wing it in whatever way I see fit. For example "Ohh, I felt a small bit of a pause when I said "eight".... then do something similar with the suit for the full revelation.

I classic force (in the event that it misses, I peek), and then go into a Derren Brown esque NLP nonsense revelation.  Sometimes I'll do it as a demonstration of pulse reading, similarly to what Michael has described.
Reuben The Great

Great topic. I agree with you both, those are the kinds of revelations I would do.
Liam

i've done the exact opposite of that a few times.. having the spectator feel my pulse and naming values, making my heart stop on their card
it doesnt really make sence, but its fun.

other than that i would probably get it to my pocket via control and top palm, then say i knew they were going to pick that card and as proof, i put a duplicate of it in my pocket before the show
Reuben The Great

You be surprised at how effective this is.

Ask them random questions. As in, birth month, pet number, grade, siblings, etc. But me deadpan, they'll believe it matters. And after each one, do bullsh*t mental calculations. Then stumble around the colour, blah blah.
Michael Kras

It's a great standard revelation, for sure, and adds a great entertaining element.
Ben Train

I don't like this question- or the answers.

Anyone want to guess why?
Michael Kras

Is it because we SHOULDN'T simply be doing a standard card reveal? That we shouldn't spontaneously forget material?

Because you like to spontaneously stir up debates in threads that Michael creates?  :-p

Agreed!
Michael Kras

I'm willing to bet that, sometimes, he really doesn't have a back-up argument... which is why he acts so secretive  Razz
Reuben The Great

Haha totally agreed! Razz
Ben Train

Ah, you of little faith.

I ALWAYS have a reason- even if it's wrong.  There are many threads I haven't posted on, just because I have nothing I feel I can add (or, frankley, it's not worth my time).

So, first thing- the answer "pulse stop" is a good one... or WAS until you begin to realize EVERYONE does it.  Think about it- it's EVERYONE'S go to revelation, because it's believable and easy.  The problem is it's a) not magical (it's possible- though unlikely.  That makes it not impossible and NOT magic) and b) it means you are the SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE.  How can you hope to separate yourself from the pack if you're all doing the same thing?

Second, the whole QUESTION is flawed.  You stated/asked: " I'm sure we've all had sudden performance requests and blank out somewhat, and in a pinch many of us would perform some sort of selection and revelation effect. But the question is, HOW do you reveal? What is your preferred method?"

There are so many things wrong with this.  First, it implies that we need to think up, after having a card selected, a way to reveal it.  If this is the case you haven't established an interesting premise, or created a "moment".  It's just a crappy amateur card trick.

Second, the "what is your preferred method" is ALSO a poor question- it's like asking what's your favorite note to end on, or favorite background color for an image.  Doesn't that depend on a TON of other factors?

If you want to discuss go to TRICKS that's a different situation- and one that we could AGAIN find fault with because once again a variety of factors would need to be addressed first (size of group, age, venue, etc).  We also risk becoming to "cafe" like.

There are other issues we could address- but those will suffice for now.

Booyah.  Let it rain.
Ben
p.s.
You REALLY think I don't have reasons?  Psh.  You don't know me very well then!

This is very true... I should have rephrased myself then. When I perform a simple effect of this nature, I am SURE to set up the premise from the get-go, so the "pulse" thing or whatever other revelation I choose to use so it doesn't seem like a "random thing" that makes no sense in relationship to the rest of the effect.

So what you are asking then is "what is your favorite go-to trick".  It's not a revelation in the standard sense, but an EFFECT if we establish a premise.
Michael Kras

That's what I meant, yes.

Ben, are you going into analytic philosophy?  Because you tend to do hardcore analysis on every single question that any of the younger guys on Magicanada ask.  Seems like your mind is hardwired to think like that.
Ben Train

Hey Brian,

My mind is hardwired to think magic- I've trained it to do that.  I cannot look at an effect without asking certain questions, pertaining to routining, impact, practicality, etc.

The same applies, possibly even more so, with magic theory.  My goal, and I'm even working on writing up a thesis paper on it, is to make magic an art.  And, in my mind, for it to BE an art it has to be expressive, deceptive, engaging and ultimately resonate with an audience.  Anything that falls short upsets me (much of my material for instance doesn't meet these lofty goals, but I WANT them to- and am working on it).

I also wasn't going to hardcore this, until people suggested (as a joke I hope) that I didn't actually have a reason for not liking the question!

Ben
Michael Kras

It was indeed a joke Ben. Smile

Those are some difficult criteria to meet all at once. Most of what I perform falls short of the criteria as well and you pose an interesting challenge.

Let's not sink to their level, shall we?
