The AWAP Book Test by David Bui
Effect: One of the fairest, most clever book tests available. The magician later impossibly identifies ANY word chosen on ANY random page!
Review: I must say, this is a very clever effect. The entire effect is impossibly shown to the spectators, who are always completely fooled. The method involved is so simple, yet basically bulletproof. This will even fool some very knowledgeable magicians! As stated before, the method is very simple yet OH so clever. It’s amazing that this hasn’t been done before, really!
As for the ebook… you are supplied with a comprehensive and very well put-together ebook complete with clear photos and clear text. Everything is made crystal clear and different moves are shown from different angles and distances. It starts off by briefly explaining the effect, and then goes into the ideas utilized in created AWAP.
After this short and sweet introduction, the ebook goes into a detailed description of the method combined with presentation and patter lines. One can really tell that a lot of thought went into this simply because the method for such as simple effect is laid out over about 20 full pages! It is obvious that David really made sure to get every last detail in there… I am grateful for this because sadly, at this time, it is not often you find an effect or DVD laid out so comprehensively.
The specifics are laid out nicely, and everything is explained in an orderly, easy-to-follow manner. Bui makes sure to really get to the core of each move used in AWAP and explains in a most detailed fashion. This is admirable, and really shows Bui’s dedication to his material.
The photos are crystal clear, and they are often shot from multiple angles and distances. Close-ups are often used to show the reader the very specific handling of a move used. You will not have any trouble understanding AWAP because each photo is very easy to follow and specifically display.
The patter supplied is very good. It is extremely well written, but unfortunately most magicians will change this patter to suit themselves or to support their own originality. However, I am certain they will all use the patter supplied as a guide. The patter supplied very much so strengthens the impact of the performance and is definitely not something to skip past.
Another element that makes this effect so strong is the climax; the reveal. The climax is played out to really appear as though you are genuinely reading the spectator’s mind, when in reality you are psychologically accomplishing another crucial element of the routine. The beauty of the whole routine is that there are no forces, peeks, or other fishy moves. All the work is done right in front of the spectators and is totally invisible.
The end of the ebook describes clean up in, once again, a clear way that will indeed leave you clean and instantly reset for another performance of AWAP. Actually, the beauty of this routine is that you start totally clean and end clean as well! No set-up, gimmicks, word forces, peeks, or anything of the sort. This is, in my opinion, the ultimate impromptu book test.
Overall, I give this effect a solid 9/10. David Bui outlines everything clearly and no details are left behind. You are only $14.95 away from learning a potentially devastating effect. Highly recommended to any mentalist or even aspiring mentalist, as this is the real work on the Book Test Plot.

I purchased this and was quite disappointed. Dai Vernon said that any time the spectator thinks they saw something, it's just as bad as if they really did see something.
With AWAP I find the special move to be exceedingly contrived. I don't want to give away secrets here, but for most mentalists this move will appear suspicious to the spectators. Further, it depends a lot on the spectator's cooperation in following instructions exactly. Indeed, when I tried it I missed the word--and being one word out is just as bad as missing completely.
I do give Mr Bui full marks for creativity. Mental magic is usually achieved by either a force or discovery. Most forces also seem contrived (Pick two cards; select the last two numbers from a "borrowed" bill, etc.). Mr Bui's method does not do this--but for me, his unique method is less attractive than the more traditional methods.
