What do YOU do when someone asks this question? What effect do you perform when you have cards with you? What effect do you perform when you have nothing on you?
I personally never go anywhere without at least one deck of cards, so the effect I always perform when someone askes me to "show them a trick" is:
Table Available: Reset by Paul Harris
Table Unavailable: Switch Places Aces by Jay Sankey and Richard Sanders
Both of them are visual, big reaction getters that I could leave solo and leave the spectators satisfied. They are also both effects I know off by heart.
If I for some reason was totally unprepared, no cards no nothing, I would perform the Twisting Arm Illusion. Also gets very good reactions from spectators and looks extremely realistic. It is a bit geekish for my taste but if I didn't have anything with me I would resort to that.

| I would do 2 Card Monte if cards were available, and Slydini's coin thru table if I didn't have cards. |

Two other card effects that immediately come to mind in such a case are Vernon's Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind... and Joel Given's More Memory Man impromptu memorized deck effect.
