My dad took to watching "Dancing With the Stars" since Helio Castronevez was on this season and he's a big Indy Car fanatic.

Well, on the night of the finale' all the poll groups said that the other finalist was going to win and that Helio didn't have a chance. I wrote down a few things and put them into an envelope and had him keep it in his pocket till the show was over. Well. . .

When the show was over, he opened the envelope. I had written:

Castronevez           [10] [10] [10] Perfect
It will look so good between my 2 Indy 500 trophies.

In an interview on the episode which is aired LIVE, Castroneves said, "I can't wait to take the trophy. It will look so good between my two Indy 500 trophies."
All three judges scored him perfect 10's, and as you may know - he won.

My dad was very surpirised that I had managed to quote Castroneves before he made the statement, since afterall the show was broadcast live, and I had given him the envelope almost an hour before Castronevez ever said that. He was also shocked that I predicted him to be the winner, when all the poll groups showed him to be behind.

What's the secret to this impossible miracle?

The truth is, there is no such thing as a live broadcast on TV anymore - with few exceptions. The results of the show where posted on the internet before the show even aired as where the quotes from Castronevez and the judges scores.

I thought this was quite a devious idea and I thought a few of you might like to give it a shot.

Next time something like this is about to end, go to a friend's house and give him your "prediction".

Here is an important subtlety - keep him away from the computer. Here's how: tell him that there is about a 30 minute delay in the video feed and if he goes to the computer before the show is over, it's cheating.

In reality, there is often a 2 hour delay in the video feed and you have already seen the results online, but this will keep him from finding that out.

A second important point about this little subtlely: you have admitted that there is a time delay, but you've eliminated the possibility that you could have used the delay in your prediction. Remember, the best lies have an element of truth. By admitting that there is a 20 minute delay in many "live" broadcasts, you admit that it is possible to know the results before the show is over. However, you also limit the time frame to 20 minutes.

Enjoy.

That is an unbelievably fantastic idea! What a great discovery! I will definitely try that out sometime. Anybody else have any thoughts?

Well, hate to bust your bubble but there are live broadcasts even today though as you have pointed out, most are pre-recorded and show in sync with what the networks need in each time zone... it was live somewhere along the line.

Secondly, "Predicting" a win of any sort is quite simple... I've won many a steak dinner and drinks offering my prediction and setting it behind the bar as a betting pool developed around my accuracy vs. the event (I love the Kentucky Derby in that I always made big $$$ with this stunt on those days)

One direction you may wish to look is Corinda -- Lesson One. Wink

Even a "live" news broadcast usually has a few minutes delay Craig. The only exceptions to this rule are events like the Kentucky Derby, which are short, allotted much more time than they need,  and require no editting.

Secondly: Good for you. . . It's typically considered a unethical use of magic to steal money from people with such con games, but hey - good for you.

I read 13 Steps, I suggest you pickup some of Osterlind's work. He could teach you to use the same effect without being a jackass and stealing from people.

Last point:
Rather obviously, this isn't a suggestion for a new addition to your routine, it's an opportunnity stunt that you can use maybe 3 times a year. Perhaps that was too complicated for you Craig.

Dbaker... you obviously haven't a clue as to who or what you're trying to spare with, do you?

The Mark Wilson course is full of "Betchya" Magic and I can assure you that more than a handful of your heroes of old have run a flim flam or two... many of us come from a Carnival & Circus background and we will run a mark when the mark is willing to take the bait, but that's from the old days before this white wash BS came into the craft... when people WORKED and had to EARN a living vs. the delusions so many have in today's world

I know of Richard's material and for magicians it's fine... I do Mentalism NOT mental magic tricks... Richard is not what I classify as being much more than a magician that does tricks, I've never found him impressive outside of some of his philosophic view and the fact that he has created a video series that I think every novice needs to own (Easy to Master Mental Magic) so that they understand just how potent some frequently overlooked gems can be.

Understand that I've forgotten more about magic than is likely, you ever came to know and it is not wise to poke this old bear, Michael will tell you that I bite and I bite hard when provoked by wannabes.

The two or three second delay is NOT the same as pre-recorded material, it is also a Federal Safety Regulation that's been around for decades... I dealt with it when I was in radio back in the 70s, it's nothing new but don't lend to you any kind of real advantage... not as I understand your theory which is overly complicated for the situation.

Please, if you want to take the high moral ground on things DON'T.  I've never met a magician that was genuinely honest and have worked with more con-artists that would give a needy person the shirt off their back if it was a genuine need.
