I know Jay Sankey has a mini essay on this topic in his book Beyond Secrets. Why does it seem nowadays that all the new magic generation seems to think about is terrifying them with magic? Are Ellusionist and all those other hardcore companies to blame? Forget about practice, presentation, flow, it's all about people calling you Satan nowadays. I personally use an elegant approach to close-up when performing at school or on the streets and still get great reactions, and I'll admit, sometimes if I really feel "on" I too will perform one of those "killer" effects (Stigmata), but why perform only effects like this. Take for example a friend of mine who we will call Chris. Chris has only been into magic for less than two years, and already he needs to have the latest and greatest. And not such by our standards, I mean whatever's new and hot from Ellusionist or Theory 11. He's never even picked up a book on magic at all and probably owns every self levitation on the market. What are these sort of magicians making us look like? Do those "mindfreaks" seriously think they are making themselves look like true performers. We have got to learn that reactions and "tricks" aren't even close to everything.
Any thoughts?

well i have nothing against theory11 or ellusionist
i do agree that those companies pumping out tricks can make alot of people think they can do magic just cause they no the secret. Thats what i dislike most, people who have bought a trick or two, and without any pratice or any thought to there presentation call themselves magicians. And i think that there are plenty of good impromtu tricks, that really amze people, instead of scaring them. Things like reset, this n' that, or an impressive coin vanish and appear routine |
