I had a gig last night... two hours of table-hopping at a dinner event hosted at a banquet center by some sort of men's club. I get there with two decks of cards, a handful of half dollars, and sponge Earplugs. I'm set to go.

Overall, I think it went quite well! The tables seemed to really enjoy themselves and my magic and most tables applauded for me at the end of my set... really nice.

So, over the course of the two hours, I'm able to hit each table more than once. Just before I leave, I decided to hit one more and call it a night... the secluded table in the corner. Here's where it got shaky.

Keep in mind that this entire table was full of people at least 40 years old... that makes this story all the more sad. It seems as though many of the members of this table were determined to bust Mr. Magician.

I approach one guy, ask if he'd like to see a card trick... he nods in agreement, shooting me a bizarre look simultaneously. I am about to extend the deck for a selection, but he suddenly tears the cards from my hand, reaches in himself at random, and pulls out a card, being very careful to keep its identity secret. Not a particular problem, obviously, but I could definitely see he was up to something.

Determined to not let me see the card, I decided to have the card returned under a key to allow me to locate and control it afterwards. I cut at my key and gestured for him to return his selection. He gave me a look, then proceeded to shove his card into the center of one of the halves... he was really testing me here! Luckily, he was sort of careless in returning his selection and lefvt me with enough of an angle-jog for me to obtain a pinky break Smile.

I decided to mess with the guy, and I shot him a confused and desperate look as I controlled his selection to the top. He sat with a huge grin on his face, certain he'd screwed me up.

I started nervously asking him questions about his card, obviously none of which he answered. So, I "nervously" gave the deck a false cut then used a double turnover to show the wrong card! He was delighted with himself, and I had him right where I wanted him. He maintained his grin, sure he'd stumped me and fooled the magician. I then shrugged, executed a colour change to change the wrong card into his selection.... and MAN, did his expression ever change quickly! He face suddenly went into a frowning droop, and just sat there wide-eyed. As I walked away from the table I heard him muttering "I was SO SURE I got him.... there's just no way, there's just NO WAY."

Sorry, proud magi moment, thought I'd share Smile.

I'm sure that was a great moment for you.  It's what all magicians secretly live for - the spectator who wants to screw us up, and then we get to pull them on a mini emotional rollercoaster and shove it back in their face.  Nice!  [No one else commented on this thread, so I figured I should.]

It was fun, that's for sure, and a great way to cap off my evening. I also REALLY enjoyed acting desperate, lost, and defeated... it was just great Smile.
